World Travel – Greece 2007 – Part VI

We return to mainland Greece, this time to a different hotel in Athens with a different view of the Acropolis. We enjoy another evening including stopping by our favorite restaurant. There were some great night shots of the city we took from the roof. Come morning we left for the airport and returned to the US via Germany.

World Travel – Greece 2007 – Part V

We travel back to the Cyclades Islands of Greece this time making port in Santorini. This is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion, destroying the earliest settlements on what was formerly a single island, and leading to the creation of the current geological caldera. The city of Firá (Phira); which is a different pronunciation of “Thira”, the ancient name of the island itself.

Just before our arrival the previous tour’s cruise ship sank here. EEK!!!!!!!

World Travel – Crete 2007

We sail next to the Greek island of Crete. Our chosen destination here is the Minoan Palace of Knossos Heraklion. This was once a great structure built around 2000 BC and destroyed about 300 years later.

World Travel – Dodecanese Is. (Rhodes) – Part II

We return to the Greek Dodecanese Islands, this time we make port in Rhodes itself, at the ancient city . The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been is a World Heritage Site and a fantastic place to explore. One of the places I explored in detail was the Palace of the Grand Master. I wish we could have had more time here as the entire city is a living museum.

World Travel – Turkey in Asia (Anatolia, Ankara, Izmir)

Our next Port of Call officially puts us on the Asia side of Turkey; making port in Kuşadası Turkey. High on the hill over-looking the port is the statue of Atatürk. Our goal at this port is to head to the town of Kusadasi to visit the ruins of Ephesus. The most famous structure here is the Celsus Library. The Gospel of John might have been written here.

World Travel – Dodecanese Is. (Rhodes) – Part I

Now we sail to the island of Patmos that is part of the 12 Greek Dodecanese Islands; the largest being Rhodes. Here we visit the Cave of the Apocalypse where it is believed to mark the spot where St. John received his visions from Christ that he recorded in the Book of Revelation.

World Travel – Greece 2007 – Part IV

We now sail to the Cyclades Islands of Greece and make port in on the island of Mykonos. We quickly transfer to another small tour bout and travel to the island of Delos. Here we sent time with even more ruins and I just about missed our 5PM departure while getting in some extra video footage. Lisa was a bit mad at me for being late back to the boat…
