2011: September Outing – Part 4

On our final day we head back to Victor to explore more of the Gold Mining exhibits that are here.  The trail is known as the Lower Vindicator Valley Trail and there are lots of great historical structures to view.  Here is just one example of the many buildings there is to see.

There was also a great map on one of the signs that shows how the railroads came into this area and services the mines.

From here we take a scenic drive by heading north to Divide and then west to Lake George to get onto Highway 77 to Jefferson.  This takes into and area knows as Terryall…

As we continue towards Jefferson we will spot several old structures and stop for a few photos along the way.

We will make one last stop before going home, Kenosha Pass…

2011: September Outing – Part 3

Today’s plan is hiking in Mueller State Park which also contains Midland Terminal Railroad history.

We will head south on Highway 67 to CO Hwy 64 following the Colorado Midland Route and photograph one of the remains of an old trestle.

We will then head up to the old American Eagles Gold Mine as well as stop at the modern Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine.

2011: September Outing – Part 2

First destination of the day, a ride on the Royal Gorge Route. We will take lots of photographs and I took my new HD Camcorder for it’s first Railfan action.

We splurged a bit to ride in the Dome Car so the video did not turn out that good during the ride do to the sun glare on the window but I would take some video of the train before and after the trip that turned out very nice!

Above the tracks near Canon City several tunnels that some might mistake to be old railroad; but, Tunnel Drive (Hiking Trail Only) was built by prison inmates for water pipe to bring water into the city.  It does make for a great Railfanning location as you can see clearly down onto the tracks and we took advantage of it.

We will spend the afternoon traveling though Phantom Canyon which is the RR roadbed of the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad

I will setup the new new HD Camcorder as a Dash Camera and record the entire section as if we were the train going through the canyon.  Should make for an interesting documentary video some day interlaced with historical information and photos if I ever get the time to do it; not anytime soon though…

2011: September Outing

Lisa and I just recently took a long weekend getaway down to Colorado Springs that we used as a base camp for various day trips in the region.

We started the day touring the Garden of the Gods

Toured Miramont Castle.

This wasn’t planned to be RR destinations but what did I find in the castle!

For dinner we went to The Airplane Restaurant and ate inside Boeing KC-97 tanker (Texas Air Guard #30283 / US Air Force #283) which was a used to fuel fighters.
