Video – Pacific Southwest Railway Cab Ride

Enjoy a Round-Trip Cab ride while with me as well as seeing many of the other railroad pieces at the Campo facility as we head toward the Mexico border at Tunnel #4. In the first half I will show you a map of our location along the route as we travel backwards and then enjoy full screen view out the window as we head back toward the museum. I also included history of the Southern Pacific Diesel Engine about half way into the video. So, sit back and enjoy this ~30 minute video

2012 – Quick Lunchtime Railfanning Trip

On September 7th, I took advantage of needing to travel downtown and used my lunch hour to get in some of the local downtown shots I was missing.

My many goal was to get photographs of the “Temporary” Amtrak station in Denver while Union Station is under renovation.  They also setup a temporary platform at this location as well.

Denver, CO Denver, CO

My next two objectives are old RR structures, one being the old Denver and Salt Lake Depot and the other being the old Union Pacific Warehouse.

Denver, CO Denver, CO

With still a little bit of time left before I had to get to my appointment I would track down the old Denver Tramway Power Company Building as well as get photos of a couple pieces of rolling stock; a Santa Fe Caboose and a Trolley which is operated by the Denver Rail Heritage Society

World Travel – Alaska 2012 – Cruise Day #7

Port of Call:  Seattle, Washington

Our final day of our Alaska Adventure and as we wake, Seattle, Washington is in sight as well as the Space Needle.

Space Needle

Time for us to catch some breakfast and get ready to disembark the ship.  Before we do this, one last look at our navigation to see how far we have traveled now that we are in port.

Seattle Washington

With that, we step off the ship; BUT!, we are not yet done with this adventure as we will make a day of it in Seattle by taking a shore excursion here as well.  Time to get on our Tour Bus for a city tour…

We will head up to Queen Anne Hill at Kerry Park and catch a view of the Space Needle.  Note the ORANGE top of the Space Needle as it’s the 50th Anniversary of its construction and they have painted it back to its original color.

Queen Anne Hill - Kerry Park

Now it’s time to head over to the Space Needle and ride up the elevator to the top.  We will get our picture taken and will see a FREE Digital Postcard of ourselves from the top.  There is our ship down below…

From below we will take a few shots before catching our bus as we continue our City Tour

Seattle, WashingtonSeattle, Washington

We will briefly stop at Occidental Park for a few shots and also catch a shot of the Waterfront Street Car station that is here as well.

Seattle, Washington

Our final destination of the City Tour is the Farmers Market where we will grab some lunch…

Seattle Washington

While our bus made it’s way through the city we passed the old King Street Station that was the depot for the Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railway.  Currently there is a King Tut exhibit going on so the temporarily adjusted the station sign to read King TUT Street Station.  It was impossible to get a clean / complete shot of the station while on the bus but here is a couple of shots from different angles we did get.

Seattle WashingtonSeattle Washington

I will also get a few Railfan shots in from the bus as we headed down the highway to our hotel for the night

Seattle, WA

The next day we fly back home on board Frontier with Fritz being our animal.  We will pass Mount Rainier and I will be able to get several shots from out the plane window.  As we land in Denver I had to laugh as there was Mustang Sally at the next gate.  If you recall, that is the plane we boarded at the beginning of this adventure

Hope everyone enjoyed reading all the “World Travel – Alaska 2012 …” blog entries from this trip report as we have enjoyed sharing them with you.  Rest assured, more Travel Reports will be coming…

2012 – Wichita Kansas – Part 1

We head to Wichita Kansas to attend my nieces college graduation and add some time before/after to make a mini vacation out of it.

Well our flight out turned out to be a Turbo-Prop but at least we sat far enough back to be away from most the noise.

We get in to our hotel close to midnight and then get up early to start our next RRAdventures of 2012 by heading for Hutchinson, Kansas to track down some depots; including the Arkansas Valley Interurban Depot.

From there we head for Fort Larned National Historic Site near Larned, KS

We then head down the road a bit to the Santa Fe Trail Center that has lots of historical stuff but not as much on the Santa Fe Trail as we had hoped but still very much worth the stop; especially since they have a depot there!  The depot is from Frizell, KS and is AT&SF

With the major outside activities done (to avoid the heat) we head back into Larned itself to track down another depot

From there we head for Pawnee Rock, KS to track down their historical depot

Our next stop in Pawnee Rock is Pawnee Rock itself which was a geologic structure that mark the midpoint of the Santa Fe Trail.  We also find a lone grave to Nehemiah Carson (PVT Mexican War) who died here from an unknown illness.

We don’t have much time left but we quickly pass through Great Bend, KS to track down AT&SF Steam Engine #3416

Time to head back to Wichita, Kansas to call it a night

2011: Tunnel District

Lisa and I did some moderate hiking today in Eldorado Canyon State Park where she told me that we might get a little Railfanning in at the top of the trail.

After climbing 1,200 feet in elevation change taking in great views of the mountain canyon along Rattlesnake Gulch Trail we reach a section of the Tunnel District. We had several great views of Tunnel#8, the Daylighted #9 and if I would have known exactly where we were we were also on top of Tunnel #10.

We got the California Zephyr (running late as normal), followed by a massive UP Freight, and also caught a work train. All heading west bound.

Here is just a couple of teaser shots until a later RRAdventures topic is done on this outing.

As we head home we stop by to find where the old C&S/UP Depot was moved to as well…

Boulder, CO

2010: Railfanning East of Town; Day#10d

I continue to track down more RR items on my list in La Junta, CO with several items are all grouped together. First item is the BNSF Signal Deportment Office, also here is the old AT&SF Passenger Depot now used by Amtrak and BNSF. I also find another build marked as AT&SF but not sure what it was historically. Also will grab a few BNSF roster shots

Just down the road is also the old AT&SF Freight Depot…

Over at McDonald’s is a Caboose that I understand is AT&SF #999645 even though there are no markings left on it…

My last items on my list take me into residential territory as these are depots from other places that have been moved here are turned into homes. The first one is the Fort Lyon Depot that you can still see it’s Combination layout. The other two are the Combination Depot from Cheraw and McClave that have been combined together into a home.

Well, that’s the end of my daylight and we will pack up and head out of La Junta come morning for one last day of travel towards home…

2010: Railfanning East of Town; Day#07a

On this day we pack up and move to our next base camp to Wichita, KS; but, it will take us the entire day to get there with all the stops planned.

First stop, Topeka!!!!!!!

We first head for the AT&SF Passenger Depot which is now used by Amtrak. It’s also near the railroad faculties operated today by BNSF.

We will next head around the BNSF Facility to find the old AT&SF Bridge and in doing so we will find a Santa Fe Rotary Snow Plow; Score!!!!!!!

Next we head over into Union Pacific territory by finding the Great Overland Station and then track down the UP Bridge that also spans the Kansas River.

We had one more place to locate in Topeka; the Old Prairie Town Museum (Ward-Med Historic Site). Here we find the Ex-Pauline, KS AT&SF Combination Depot as well as Caboose #1552.

Time to head for the next stop…

2010: Railfanning East of Town; Day#06

On this day, we strike out easterly from Kansas City. We take a short drive along Cliff Drive Missouri State Scenic Byway for both the scenic drive and was also told there are good photograph points over the yard. Found lots of trees and the few place I saw the yard it wasn’t worth taking any shots.

Missouri State Scenic Byway

We then head for Independence, MO to visit the National Frontier Trails Museum and Lisa and I both had family that traveled west by wagon train.

Next door to the museum is the Chicago & Alton Railroad Depot that also has a second floor where the Station Master family lived. Got a great tour by the caretakers!!! Also here in town is the MoPac Depot that today is the Amtrak Station (a.k.a. Truman Depot) and they have a MoPac Caboose sitting outside.

After taking in lunch, we head for Buckner, MO. Here we track down the MoPac Combination Depot. To our surprise we also find a MoPac Caboose sitting with it…

It’s marked “Sedalia Yards Only” as in Sadalia, MO so it’s a few miles from home.

Our last destination of the day is Lexington, MO where we first visit the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site (Civil War).

Civil War

We also track down the “Madonna of the Trail” for Missouri that is related to wagon trail history.

Missouri

We have to take an interesting back road to get to the CB&Q Combination Depot put we found it as well.

Back to Kansas City and to our hotel in Overland Park. We will need our rest before taking on Day #07…
