Video – Pacific Southwest Railway Cab Ride

Enjoy a Round-Trip Cab ride while with me as well as seeing many of the other railroad pieces at the Campo facility as we head toward the Mexico border at Tunnel #4. In the first half I will show you a map of our location along the route as we travel backwards and then enjoy full screen view out the window as we head back toward the museum. I also included history of the Southern Pacific Diesel Engine about half way into the video. So, sit back and enjoy this ~30 minute video

2012 – A Lyons Catch

On November 4th, we decided to head up to Estes Park for do a little shopping and have lunch at one of our favorite local restaurants.  After lunch we headed up into Rocky Mountain Nation Park as a nice afternoon drive.  We stopped at the Visitor Center to pick up some information for next year…

I would also stop to take a photo of the memorial to Ranger Jeff Christensen who was killed in a fall on the Mummy Range here in the park

As we head back for home I will catch three (3) Railroad Cars in Lyons, Colorado.  All three are now static displays that are on private property and one of them (BN Caboose) is currently “For Rent” for a very small business along the highway.  All three could sure use some TLC if they are survive as historical cars…

2012 – Quick Lunchtime Railfanning Trip

On September 7th, I took advantage of needing to travel downtown and used my lunch hour to get in some of the local downtown shots I was missing.

My many goal was to get photographs of the “Temporary” Amtrak station in Denver while Union Station is under renovation.  They also setup a temporary platform at this location as well.

My next two objectives are old RR structures, one being the old Denver and Salt Lake Depot and the other being the old Union Pacific Warehouse.

Denver, CO Denver, CO

With still a little bit of time left before I had to get to my appointment I would track down the old Denver Tramway Power Company Building as well as get photos of a couple pieces of rolling stock; a Santa Fe Caboose and a Trolley which is operated by the Denver Rail Heritage Society

2012 – Wichita Kansas – Part 4

It’s now Day #4 of our five-day mini vacation.  The rest of the family heads home today but we will remain to explore more of the area.  We will start off heading out to Beaumont, Kansas to track down a Frisco Water Tower that is the last of its kind.

Beaumont, KS

We now head to Augusta, KS to track down an old SLSF (Frisco) Depot as well as an old AT&SF Depot that is now used by BNSF.  We found a few BNSF critters while we were there along with some other equipment.

Augusta, KSAugusta, KSAugusta, KS

From there it is off to Winfield, KS to track down an AT&SF Depot and by chance I spot the “modern” BNSF building behind it and also catch a diesel engine that I can get a quick shot of.

Winfield, KSWinfield, KSWinfield, KS

Our next stop is Mulvane, KS where we are again tracking down another AT&SF Depot along with a Santa Fe Caboose.  It’s a museum that we knew would not be open but that does not mean I can’t take photos of the outside!

Mulvane, KSMulvane, KS

We get a bite to eat as we head back to Wichita, KS.  As the wife reminds me often; not everything on our trips gets to be RR related.  I agree and at 1PM the Museum of World Treasures opens up and it’s a very nice museum with items from many different eras so off to museum we go.  The second floor is filed with all sort of military stuff from old to semi-modern times; well worth the stop

Wichita, KS

Afterwards I drop Lisa off at the hotel as it has gotten extremely hot and she is wiped.  During our travels earlier in the day I spotted what looked to be a depot and a caboose near Douglass so I will head back out.  Sure enough I find a AT&SF Depot (which is actually a replica) and another SF Caboose; score!

Douglass, KSDouglass, KS

The caboose is actually For Sale so if anyone is interested I have the owner’s contact info.  I wonder what the S&H costs would be on it as I think it would look great in my backyard.

Well, time to head back to Wichita and take Lisa to dinner but I have still a little time to stop by Friends University to check out the campus my niece just graduated from.  I will take a few pictures to add into the video I going to make for her of her graduation.  Here is the Admin. Building that is the largest of the buildings on campus.

2012 – Wichita Kansas – Part 2

It’s Day #2 of our mini vacation and today we head off in another direction.  It’s going to be another clear day but also HOT so we head out early and head to the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure in Salina, KS.  This “Zoo” is two-fold. the normal outside zoo and an interior Museum.

Museum

Also at this location is the UP Tescott, Kansas Depot that today is their old ticket office for the Zoo.

Our next stop is Lindsborg, Kansas (also know as Little Sweden) to track down a MoPac Depot and AT&SF Steam Engine and let the wife do a little shopping.

We then head for Newton, KS to track down a AT&SF depot and steam engine and well we found allot more, this is a major BNSF town with all sorts of other RR things to enjoy.  Here is a few sample shots…

Our final destination for the day before heading back to Wichita is Halstead where we will track down one more AT&SF depot.

2012 – Wichita Kansas – Part 1

We head to Wichita Kansas to attend my nieces college graduation and add some time before/after to make a mini vacation out of it.

Well our flight out turned out to be a Turbo-Prop but at least we sat far enough back to be away from most the noise.

We get in to our hotel close to midnight and then get up early to start our next RRAdventures of 2012 by heading for Hutchinson, Kansas to track down some depots; including the Arkansas Valley Interurban Depot.

From there we head for Fort Larned National Historic Site near Larned, KS

We then head down the road a bit to the Santa Fe Trail Center that has lots of historical stuff but not as much on the Santa Fe Trail as we had hoped but still very much worth the stop; especially since they have a depot there!  The depot is from Frizell, KS and is AT&SF

With the major outside activities done (to avoid the heat) we head back into Larned itself to track down another depot

From there we head for Pawnee Rock, KS to track down their historical depot

Our next stop in Pawnee Rock is Pawnee Rock itself which was a geologic structure that mark the midpoint of the Santa Fe Trail.  We also find a lone grave to Nehemiah Carson (PVT Mexican War) who died here from an unknown illness.

We don’t have much time left but we quickly pass through Great Bend, KS to track down AT&SF Steam Engine #3416

Time to head back to Wichita, Kansas to call it a night

2010: Railfanning East of Town; Day#11

Our final day of our trip is here and still lots planned. As we woke from a restless night as we could hear trains passing the hotel what seemed throughout the night as if they were in our room, we find one sitting on the tracks that Lisa and I got out our cameras and took a few early morning shots, one of those was of this Ferromex engine.

There was one more depot here that I didn’t get to on Day#10 because we were not sure where exactly it was. We agreed to give it another shot before leaving town and after some driving around we finally spotted it. It’s the AT&SF Combination from Thatcher that was moved to the south side of La Junta that is part of the Valley Trading Post property now.

OK, time to head out of La Junta and head for Rocky Ford as we continue to track down more AT&SF Depots.

We make a small detour north to Sugar City where we track down a UP Caboose they have in a small park on the north side of town.

From there we travel to Manzanola, Fowler, Boone, and Devine to find all the AT&SF depots in those cities. The one in Devine was from Avondale.

From there we head into Pueblo and look for a place to have lunch. We decided that we are both nearly worn out and will call it a day after visiting the Steal Works Museum of Industry & Culture; which is also where Mine Rescue Car #1 sits as a display piece.

From there we head for home after 2,572.5 miles of road miles plus a ton of walking but if you have been reading all the blog entries you know we had a very successful trip.

Shortly after getting back and working on this Trip Report I was contacted by the person building a new website dedicated to existing depots (http://depotmaps.com/) and asked if I could help him which I agree to. So, if/when you visit his site some photos there might look like those form this blog because they are.  I have a ton more I plan to help him with as well as his site will be an extremely helpful for me and others for future depot location information.
