World Travel – Alaska 2012 – Cruise Day #7

Port of Call:  Seattle, Washington

Our final day of our Alaska Adventure and as we wake, Seattle, Washington is in sight as well as the Space Needle.

Space Needle

Time for us to catch some breakfast and get ready to disembark the ship.  Before we do this, one last look at our navigation to see how far we have traveled now that we are in port.

Seattle Washington

With that, we step off the ship; BUT!, we are not yet done with this adventure as we will make a day of it in Seattle by taking a shore excursion here as well.  Time to get on our Tour Bus for a city tour…

We will head up to Queen Anne Hill at Kerry Park and catch a view of the Space Needle.  Note the ORANGE top of the Space Needle as it’s the 50th Anniversary of its construction and they have painted it back to its original color.

Queen Anne Hill - Kerry Park

Now it’s time to head over to the Space Needle and ride up the elevator to the top.  We will get our picture taken and will see a FREE Digital Postcard of ourselves from the top.  There is our ship down below…

From below we will take a few shots before catching our bus as we continue our City Tour

We will briefly stop at Occidental Park for a few shots and also catch a shot of the Waterfront Street Car station that is here as well.

Seattle, Washington

Our final destination of the City Tour is the Farmers Market where we will grab some lunch…

Seattle Washington

While our bus made it’s way through the city we passed the old King Street Station that was the depot for the Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railway.  Currently there is a King Tut exhibit going on so the temporarily adjusted the station sign to read King TUT Street Station.  It was impossible to get a clean / complete shot of the station while on the bus but here is a couple of shots from different angles we did get.

I will also get a few Railfan shots in from the bus as we headed down the highway to our hotel for the night

Seattle, WA

The next day we fly back home on board Frontier with Fritz being our animal.  We will pass Mount Rainier and I will be able to get several shots from out the plane window.  As we land in Denver I had to laugh as there was Mustang Sally at the next gate.  If you recall, that is the plane we boarded at the beginning of this adventure

Hope everyone enjoyed reading all the “World Travel – Alaska 2012 …” blog entries from this trip report as we have enjoyed sharing them with you.  Rest assured, more Travel Reports will be coming…

Time to turn back to Wichita and head to the airport.  We will grab lunch at the airport and wait for our plane to arrive.

We are one again home after getting dumped off on the tarmac at DIA.  Our niece who had just graduated is there to pick us up and take us home via the scenic route,  Now if she can get a job at the Denver Zoo all would be great.

2012 – Wichita Kansas – Part 4

It’s now Day #4 of our five-day mini vacation.  The rest of the family heads home today but we will remain to explore more of the area.  We will start off heading out to Beaumont, Kansas to track down a Frisco Water Tower that is the last of its kind.

Beaumont, KS

We now head to Augusta, KS to track down an old SLSF (Frisco) Depot as well as an old AT&SF Depot that is now used by BNSF.  We found a few BNSF critters while we were there along with some other equipment.

Augusta, KSAugusta, KSAugusta, KS

From there it is off to Winfield, KS to track down an AT&SF Depot and by chance I spot the “modern” BNSF building behind it and also catch a diesel engine that I can get a quick shot of.

Winfield, KSWinfield, KSWinfield, KS

Our next stop is Mulvane, KS where we are again tracking down another AT&SF Depot along with a Santa Fe Caboose.  It’s a museum that we knew would not be open but that does not mean I can’t take photos of the outside!

Mulvane, KSMulvane, KS

We get a bite to eat as we head back to Wichita, KS.  As the wife reminds me often; not everything on our trips gets to be RR related.  I agree and at 1PM the Museum of World Treasures opens up and it’s a very nice museum with items from many different eras so off to museum we go.  The second floor is filed with all sort of military stuff from old to semi-modern times; well worth the stop

Wichita, KS

Afterwards I drop Lisa off at the hotel as it has gotten extremely hot and she is wiped.  During our travels earlier in the day I spotted what looked to be a depot and a caboose near Douglass so I will head back out.  Sure enough I find a AT&SF Depot (which is actually a replica) and another SF Caboose; score!

Douglass, KSDouglass, KS

The caboose is actually For Sale so if anyone is interested I have the owner’s contact info.  I wonder what the S&H costs would be on it as I think it would look great in my backyard.

Well, time to head back to Wichita and take Lisa to dinner but I have still a little time to stop by Friends University to check out the campus my niece just graduated from.  I will take a few pictures to add into the video I going to make for her of her graduation.  Here is the Admin. Building that is the largest of the buildings on campus.

2012 – Wichita Kansas – Part 2

It’s Day #2 of our mini vacation and today we head off in another direction.  It’s going to be another clear day but also HOT so we head out early and head to the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure in Salina, KS.  This “Zoo” is two-fold. the normal outside zoo and an interior Museum.

Museum

Also at this location is the UP Tescott, Kansas Depot that today is their old ticket office for the Zoo.

Our next stop is Lindsborg, Kansas (also know as Little Sweden) to track down a MoPac Depot and AT&SF Steam Engine and let the wife do a little shopping.

We then head for Newton, KS to track down a AT&SF depot and steam engine and well we found allot more, this is a major BNSF town with all sorts of other RR things to enjoy.  Here is a few sample shots…

Our final destination for the day before heading back to Wichita is Halstead where we will track down one more AT&SF depot.

2011: October Outing – Part 3

Before leaving Grand Junction where we have spent the last two nights we head back to get some daylight shots of not only the Depots but other railroad structures I had not yet photographed before.  Thanks to directions from Ben the night before I got some great shots!

We leave Grand Junction and head towards Whitewater via US50, then turn south on 141 taking the Unaweep Tabeguache Byway.  We will take a short detour on Forest Access Divide Road up towards Uncompahgre Plateau ( 38°50’0″N / 108°34’41″W) for some great shots up and down the valley.

Once we reach the area near Gateway the geology turns RED ( 38°40’32″N / 108°58’39″W) which is how Colorado got its name (Color Red).  What a beautiful byway, a must drive if you are ever in this area!

We will also stop to get some great shots of the Hanging Flume ( 38°23’54.00″N / 108°48’34.00″W) which was an engineer marvel for its time.  I can’t imagine what it took to build this thing on the side of a cliff for as long as they did.

We will turn onto 145 near Naturita, CO and head towards Placerville, CO and turn up the pace to get to Dolores, CO to get to the depot before it closes and get shots of Rio Grande Southern Goose #5.

From there we head into Cortez for the night…

Note:  Highway 145 from Placerville to Dolores roughly follows a portion of the Rio Grande Southern.  More on this with Day #4 coming up next…

2011: October Outing – Part 2

We start our second day in a bit of a fog bank but as we head into the Colorado National Monument it starts to clear.

With clear skies we spend most of the day hiking and taking in the sights

We will take the Coke Ovens Trail to get a different vantage point away from most the other tourists also in the park.

Our big hike on the day is on the Devils Kitchen Trail where we will get into the opening in the upright boulders of the Kayenta Formation.

We will get back to our hotel in Grand Junction and grab a bite to eat.  Afterwards I will get a chance to meet a fellow Railfan (Ben) that up until then I have only know via internet forums.

Afterwards I will take a few night shots in and around the depots

2011: San Diego Vacation

In April we took our first major vacation in a few years and headed to San Diego, CA.

Our second day we traveled to the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum and take a train ride; can you say CAB RIDE!

We will also take time now and then to catch RR Depot and Displays.

Near our Hotel were a couple of RR Yards and I did get a chance to go down and catch some action.

As part of our trip we also went to Balboa Park where the San Diego Model Railroad Museum is at; VERY NICE! There is also a nice little RR ride that we took time to photograph.

Details to follow in a future RRAdventures topic.
