2012 – Wichita Kansas – Part 1

We head to Wichita Kansas to attend my nieces college graduation and add some time before/after to make a mini vacation out of it.

Well our flight out turned out to be a Turbo-Prop but at least we sat far enough back to be away from most the noise.

We get in to our hotel close to midnight and then get up early to start our next RRAdventures of 2012 by heading for Hutchinson, Kansas to track down some depots; including the Arkansas Valley Interurban Depot.

From there we head for Fort Larned National Historic Site near Larned, KS

We then head down the road a bit to the Santa Fe Trail Center that has lots of historical stuff but not as much on the Santa Fe Trail as we had hoped but still very much worth the stop; especially since they have a depot there!  The depot is from Frizell, KS and is AT&SF

With the major outside activities done (to avoid the heat) we head back into Larned itself to track down another depot

From there we head for Pawnee Rock, KS to track down their historical depot

Our next stop in Pawnee Rock is Pawnee Rock itself which was a geologic structure that mark the midpoint of the Santa Fe Trail.  We also find a lone grave to Nehemiah Carson (PVT Mexican War) who died here from an unknown illness.

We don’t have much time left but we quickly pass through Great Bend, KS to track down AT&SF Steam Engine #3416

Time to head back to Wichita, Kansas to call it a night

World Travel – Greece 2007 – Part II

We finally leave Athens and head initially south to the Temple of Poseidon. We then head back north and cross the Corinth Canal to Peloponnisos. Here we see the Temple of Apollo, Mycenae Line Gate and ruins and the Beehive Tombs, the Amphitheater of Epidaurus, then onto Nafplio where we see the Bourtzi Fortress and then pass though Mikine / Mykhnia on our way to Dytiki Ellada.

It so amazing to see so much ancient history that you studied as a child in person like this.

World Travel – Mexico (Guerrero) 2001 – Part I

We leave Costa Rica and head north up the coast making port in Acapulco, Mexico. This would be the final port for most of the passengers; but, not for us. We are taking advantage of what is called a repositioning cruise as cruise ship companies get there ships out of the Caribbean and head for Alaska. We will stay on board and enjoy the Mexican Rivera and ext in Los Angles. So, our first port of the second half of our cruise is Acapulco…

HMCS Kootenay (DDE 258)

Let’s talk about this ship a bit more since this is part of “ReefGate” and was big news here from 1999 to 2001. This Canadian Naval ship (and Restigouche – DDE 257) was towed from Canada to here to become an artificial reef on Navy Day, June 1, 2000. Well, there was a question on how they were purchased and here they sat until it was cleared up in 2001. Shortly after I took this photo the Kootenay was sunk near the Restigouche that was sunk just before our arrival.

World Travel – Colombia

We depart Aruba and and head into South America making port in Cartagena, Colombia. What caught my eye the most was the forts that guarded the bay and the massive Castle in town we spent the day touring. You could get lost in this place and that was the idea as part of it’s defenses.
