2012 – Wichita Kansas – Part 2

It’s Day #2 of our mini vacation and today we head off in another direction.  It’s going to be another clear day but also HOT so we head out early and head to the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure in Salina, KS.  This “Zoo” is two-fold. the normal outside zoo and an interior Museum.

Also at this location is the UP Tescott, Kansas Depot that today is their old ticket office for the Zoo.

Our next stop is Lindsborg, Kansas (also know as Little Sweden) to track down a MoPac Depot and AT&SF Steam Engine and let the wife do a little shopping.

We then head for Newton, KS to track down a AT&SF depot and steam engine and well we found allot more, this is a major BNSF town with all sorts of other RR things to enjoy.  Here is a few sample shots…

Our final destination for the day before heading back to Wichita is Halstead where we will track down one more AT&SF depot.

2010: Railfanning East of Town; Day#09

On our 9th day, we will tour around Wichita itself. We planned to go to the Zoo early with my niece and her roommate; but, the roommate is a bit slow getting going. So, Lisa and I head downtown on a Depot hunt! Yep we got a nice haul all in one spot; (1) KCM&O from Runnymede, KS, (2) Rock Island Passenger, (3) Rock Island Baggage, and (4) UNION Station

The girls are now dressed and ready so off to the zoo we go. After getting our personal tour of the place we stop for lunch.

Now it’s my turn and I take the girls back downtown to the Great Plains Transportation Museum. It was great fun to share my hobby with them as they explored the various railroad equipment with me. Lisa also makes sure we captured a shot of my niece and me together!

I take the girls out to dinner too. From there the girls take Lisa and I over to see the Keeper of the Plains monument which is a massive Native American statue they light up with fires and night. The girls also give us a tour of their campus before calling it a night and get some needed sleep.

Day #10 will be another travel day with lots of RR hunting as we start heading for home…

2010: Railfanning East of Town; Day#03

After spending time in the Hays Kansas area, we again head East towards Overland, Kansas.

During our travels, we first stop in Victoria to visit the Cathedral of the Plains and the German Immigrant Statue there.

While in town we learned about a Union Pacific Cemetery that was created for Six (6) Track Laborers that were killed by Cheyenne Indians around October 1867. Is hidden in a small grove just around the corner from the UP Bridge that cross over the road.

Our next stop was in Marquette, KS where we hiked around an area know locally as Mushroom Rock State Park. There are some neat geological formation there

We then head to Silina, KS where we first visit the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure. This is a unique museum they have here with their zoo that is setup as real life displays of wildlife from around the world with some animation. Extreme real looking!

We then turn back to railroad hunting and spend allot of time tracking down several RR Passenger and Freight stations here in Silina.

MoPac Freight

UP Freight

I also caught a Kansas and Oklahoma engine near the ATSF Freight that they now use…

Lastly we travel over to Kenwood Park to find UP#477

From there we make our way to Overland, KS which will be our base camp for several days.
